Marcel Hendrik Pinas (Pelgrim Kondre, 1971) is een van de beroemdste Surinaamse kunstenaars van dit moment. Hij is schilder en maakt installaties. Kibri a kulturu, bescherm de cultuur, is het motto achter zijn werk waarmee hij de cultuur van zijn voorouders wil behouden, de Marron cultuur van de Ndyuka. Met zijn werk en zijn activiteiten vraagt Pinas tevens aandacht voor de nijpende sociaal-maatschappelijke omstandigheden die het welzijn en het voortbestaan van marron- en inheemse leefgemeenschappen in Suriname bedreigen.
Naast zijn karakteristieke gebruik van het Afaka schrift, gebruikt Pinas culturele objecten van de Marron zoals delen van een boomstamkano, stukken van paris peddels, kleine matapis (langgerekte, geweven rotan buisjes die gebruikt worden om repen cassave uit te persen), stukken pangi stof (geruite stof gebruikt voor lenden- en omslagdoeken), papamoni’s (schelpen die voorheen werden gebruikt als valuta), kokolampen (olielampen) en aluminium lepels.
Pinas, opgeleid aan het Nola Hatterman Instituut in Paramaribo, het Edna Manley College of Visual and Performing Arts in Jamaica en aan de Rijksacademie in Amsterdam, heeft in de afgelopen jaren veelvuldig geëxposeerd in Europa, Zuid Amerika en de VS.
De Grote Suriname tentoonstelling
Het geboortedorp van Pinas ligt in het noordoosten van Suriname nabij Moengo en Moiwana in het district Marowijne. Plaatsen die midden in het conflict van de Binnenlandse Oorlog stonden. In 2007 heeft hij een groot monument gemaakt voor de slachtoffers van ‘Het bloedbad van Moiwana’, toen regeringstroepen 38 mensen, onder wie kinderen en bejaarden, hebben vermoord. Een absoluut dieptepunt in deze oorlog die duurde van 1986 tot 1992.
Bij de Grote Suriname tentoonstelling in de Nieuwe Kerk (begin 2020) toont Pinas een tweede monument: een lange gedekte offertafel getiteld ‘Moiwana 86 Tafa’. Er om heen 38 stoelen, erop 38 borden. De stoelen zijn bedekt met zwarte en witte kleden, als bij een rouwplechtigheid. Op de borden staan krantenfoto’s van soldaten en lijken, het weinige tastbare bewijs van de moord. De lepels zijn ook versierd. In Afaka melden ze ‘Bescherm ons’ – een herinnering aan het feit dat de verantwoordelijken voor de moorden nog immer vrij rond lopen. Pinas’ installatie is een oproep om de gebeurtenis niet te vergeten en tegelijk een eerbetoon aan de slachtoffers. Houd onze geschiedenis levend, lijkt de tafel te zeggen. Kibri a Kultura.
Tembe Art Studio
Marcel Pinas draagt via zijn Stichting Kibii bij aan de ontwikkeling van zijn geboortestreek. Hij probeert jongeren te interesseren voor moderne kunst en oude ambachten. Zij kunnen lessen volgen en zelfstandig ‘artistieke produkten’ maken.
De Tembe Art Studio (TAS) te Moengo is het centrum van al deze activiteiten. Kunstobjecten van Marcel Pinas, waaronder ook het bekende Moiwana-monument, staan verspreid in de openbare ruimte in het district Marowijne.
