LOVE REVOLUTION – Erik Hessel
Born 8-10-1951 The Hague
Hessel trained at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam and graduated in 1975. Erik Hessel gets his inspiration from interpreting and researching the architectural design of indoor and outdoor spaces. By looking at the material, mostly waste materials, visual images arise in his mind whereby obtaining a third dimension in the flat plane is his main concern.

Free, experimental and musical (rhythm), he searches for the translation from 2d to 3d, giving depth to the flat surface. What are the possibilities within this boundary?

Color, texture, structure, the application of lines and planes contribute to this search. He also works with a collage-like technique and creates works in free space.

Besides form, which is represented by balancing horizontal and vertical visual elements, space and depth play a major role in his work. Hessel realizes that reality is a combination of form and space. He recognizes that everything is space: the form itself, but also the empty space around that form.

In drawing, lines are the main means of expression. In painting, however, the lines are abstracted by areas of color, the boundaries of the areas show themselves as lines and retain their great value within the pursuit of depth.

The answer to the final composition from 2 d to 3 d seems never ending, and that is what makes his work so contemporary and refreshing.

Besides his free work, he has also been involved in urban planning solutions for years. Currently, Erik Hessel works as an architect/draughtsman in addition to his artistry.
